Survey: 3 in 10 Android Users Would Consider Upgrading to iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 official unveil may still be a week or so off, but it is safe to assume at this point that we know everything there is to know about the lineup.

The upcoming iPhone series is already shaping up to be the biggest launch in years for Apple, with several leaks and reports suggesting plenty of new additions as well as a brand new design.

Now with the latest reports pointing to an October 13 launch, we decided to do a follow-up to our purchase intent survey published a few weeks ago.

In the last survey, we asked more than 2500 iPhone users whether they intend to upgrade to the upcoming iPhone 12, and four in 10 said they would.

And this time, we asked the same question and more to over 2000 Android users, and here is what we found out.

Key takeaways from the survey

Nearly 33% of Android users would consider getting an iPhone 12 as their next upgrade.
The compact iPhone 12 Mini is the most popular pick at 48.1%, followed by iPhone 12 Pro Max (22.9%), iPhone 12 Pro (18.1%), and iPhone 12 Max (10.9%).
The reasons for ditching their current Android phone for a brand new iPhone 12, in the order of votes polled, Longer Software Support (55.9%), Better Privacy Protection (48.8%), Compact Form Factor (36.9%), Better Prices (30.9%), Better Features (24.7%), 5G Connectivity (19%), Better UI (12.1%).
36% of Android users said ‘yes’ when asked if they would consider buying a 2020 iPad model, with 66.7% of them opting for the iPad 8th Gen and 33.3% going with the iPad Air 2020.
Only 17.1% of Android users would consider purchasing a 2020 Apple Watch model, with 73.5% of them opting for the Apple Watch SE and 26.5% going with the Apple Watch Series 6.

33% to consider the iPhone 12 as their next upgrade

“As an existing Android user, would you consider buying the upcoming iPhone 12 when you upgrade?”. We asked this question to more than 2000 respondents with an Android handset, and the results are as follows.

More than three in 10 Android users (33%) said they would consider buying an iPhone 12 model the next time they upgrade.
Whereas, 67% responded with a resounding ‘no’ to the same question.

According to several reliable reports, the iPhone 12 lineup will consist of four different variants — 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. The expected prices of the said models are $649, $749, $999, and $1099, respectively.

To the 33% who said ‘yes’ to buying the iPhone 12, we asked which of the four models would they choose when they upgrade, and here is what we learned.

The smallest and the cheapest of the four variants, the iPhone 12 Mini is the most popular pick with over 48% votes.
iPhone 12 Pro Max is the second most popular option at 23%.
Other responses — iPhone 12 Pro (18.1%), iPhone 12 Max (10.9%).

Additionally, when asked for the reason(s) why they would make the switch from their current Android phone to an upcoming iPhone 12 model, respondents revealed the following to be the deciding factors.

Interests in other new Apple releases

Apple took the wraps off their brand new iPads and smartwatches at the September 15 ‘Time Flies’ virtual event.

For the uninitiated, the new releases include two new iPads — namely, iPad 8th Gen (starts at $329) and iPad Air 2020 (starts at $599), and two new Apple Watch models — namely, Apple Watch Series 6 (starts at $399), and budget-friendly Apple Watch SE (starts at $299).

With the new iPads and smartwatches already up for grabs through Apple stores and other select retailers, we asked the same set of Android users whether they intend to buy any of them, and here is what we found out.

36% of Android users would consider buying either of the new iPads if they were in the market for a new tablet.

Of those planning to get a 2020 iPad model, a majority (66.7%) want the cheaper iPad 8th Gen model, while 33.3% opted for the iPad Air 2020 model.

When it comes to buying a new smartwatch, only 17% of Android users responded in favor of getting a 2020 Apple Watch model.

Of those buying a 2020 Apple Watch, a majority (73.5%) would go with the newest addition to the lineup, Apple Watch SE. Meanwhile, the other 26.5% would choose Apple Watch Series 6 over the budget-friendly Watch SE.

Methodology

The report is based on an online survey – conducted between September 26-30, 2020 – involving more than 2000 Android phone users, aged 18 years or older, based in the United States.

The responses to the survey were collected without storing any personally identifiable information of the involved respondents.

The motive of the survey was to collect responses from Android users regarding their intent to buy the upcoming iPhone 12 and other new releases from Apple, including the iPads and Apple Watches.
